Sell Your Idea By Stating A Problem

This is the first post of a series of posts on how to sell your idea. I’ve gotten many emails from people asking me about this topic. Its clear that many people like to know tips on ways to sell ideas.

I do have tips that could help you sell your idea to a company, your boss, etc. In each post I will explain one tip on how to do this. In this way the post stays short so you can crack on with your busy life!

Sell a Problem, Create a Demand

The idea you want to sell is in your head for some time now right? It has been lingering in your brain for days, weeks, months even! Now you’ve come to the point you can finally sell your idea to the right person. Wait!

There is a good chance you jump in too enthusiastic. This may tell an unconstructive story that doesn’t make sense. Take a breath and try to place yourself into the person you want to sell your idea to. This person is probably someone with a good status, someone who has his/her life in order. Why should (s)he want to buy this idea from you? Here is what you do: sell a problem first.

By selling a problem first you get attention and you eventually create demand. Because if you sell this problem successfully, you are the one closest by to come up with a solution. By stating a problem you’ve created a demand. A demand for a solution. The solution: your idea.

Sell Your Idea In A Smart Way

Be smart. The problem you state needs to make sense. Don’t make stuff up but do some research and ask around. There is a chance that your idea is not in demand. That can be tough for you, but be honest to yourself. If its shit, move on and think of another idea.

If you notice that your idea is in demand, do some extra research elsewhere. In this way you have two independent research groups. Thats valuable data. Data that will back up your problem, your solution and your idea. Especially if you want it to reach overseas.
